One of the things that makes quartz such a perfect material for kitchen and bathroom counters is its durability. With just a little TLC, you can keep your quartz counters looking good as new. Here’s how to clean, disinfect, and keep up with your quartz countertops over time.
First: What Not To Do
While quartz is extremely durable, it’s not totally indestructible. When choosing cleaning products for your quartz countertops, steer clear of anything acidic or abrasive: these can scratch and damage your countertops. It’s also important to use kitchen accessories like cutting boards, trivets, and plates to protect your quartz countertops from everyday wear and tear.
6 Steps to a Clean Quartz Countertop
- Gather Your Supplies & Clear Your Countertops
For the next six steps, you’ll need: warm water, dish soap, a non-abrasive sponge, isopropyl alcohol, a spray bottle, and a clean rag. Gather these, then clear your counter of appliances, decor, etc. It’s important to clean the whole counter rather than cleaning around whatever fixtures normally live on top of it.
- Get Rid of Debris
Even the tidiest homes usually have some amount of dust, debris, and crumbs on the countertops. Clear these off with a dry sponge before you start deep cleaning the counter to avoid micro-abrasions and scratches.
- Gently Scrub the Surface
Put some warm water and a few drops of dish soap onto your non-abrasive sponge. Gently scrub your countertops in an S shape, starting at your backsplash and moving forward. Feel free to push a little harder to work out tough stains or sticky spots. If all else fails, you can use a razor blade to carefully scrape dried-on blemishes off your counter.
- Rinse + Dry Your Counters
Rinse the suds from your counter and dry them using a clean rag or towel.
- Disinfect Your Countertops
Mix ¼ cup of rubbing alcohol with two cups of water to create a simple disinfectant solution. You can also add 1-2 drops of your favorite essential oil if you’d like to create a scented disinfectant solution. Using your spray bottle, spray the entire surface of your quartz countertops and let sit for two or three minutes.
- Dry the Surface One Final Time
Use a clean, dry rag or towel to wipe away any excess moisture. Congrats—you’re done!
