Sure, we all love seeing the latest design trends on HGTV… But when it comes to redesigning for your own home, jumping onto the trend bandwagon may not be your best bet. Whether you want to choose a design scheme that you know you’ll never grow tired of or you’re designing with future buyers in mind, there are a handful of classic countertop materials that are sure to never go out of style. These are a few of our favorite tips for designing tol defy the test of time.

1. Choose traditional materials.

Concrete, glass, and upcycled countertops are fun and all, but there’s a reason natural stone has been used in homes for centuries on end. If you’re planning a remodel that you hope will outlive current trends, stick with classic, natural materials like marble, quartz, quartzite, and granite. These natural stones look beautiful with almost any paint color or appliance style, so you can freshen up the look of your home as the years go by without needing to invest time and money in rehauling your countertops.

2. Opt for a classic shape.

It’s your house of course, but to achieve that traditional look, we’d recommend steering clear of extreme, contemporary, or unique shapes for your countertops. Clean rectangles and squares help you make the most of the space in your kitchen and bathroom.

3. Be mindful of color.

When selecting countertops, most folks put a lot of time into choosing the right material… But color can sometimes be a bit of an afterthought. Though white kitchens are all the rage at the moment, there are other options. Black, white, brown, and grey are all classic tones that look nice with a variety of wall and cabinet colors. Generally speaking, sticking with a mostly neutral palette is the best way to achieve a classic design in any room.
